Types of Dentures
Full Dentures – A full denture replaces an entire arch of missing teeth. This removable appliance is supported by the gums as well as the underlying bone ridge. Denture adhesive may be necessary to help stabilize this type of denture.
Partial Dentures – A partial denture replaces several missing teeth in one or both arches. Partial dentures rest on the gums like traditional dentures, but they also have dental clasps that hook around adjacent teeth, adding an extra layer of support and stability.
Implant-Supported Dentures – Dental implants can be used to provide unparalleled stability for your replacement teeth. Implants are titanium posts placed directly into the jaw. Once healed, implants can support a removable or fixed denture. This option eliminates the risk of dentures shifting in your mouth and embarrassing you.
Fountain of Youth Dentures – Our dentist is proud to be one of the few doctors trained in the innovative Fountain of Youth™ Dentures system. The FOY® system approaches denture design by taking both neuromuscular and cosmetic considerations into account. Since your face develops around your natural teeth at their full height and size, replacing teeth with dentures should consider these factors as well. The FOY® system considers the impact your teeth had on the muscles of your jaw and factors this into the fit.

Traditional Dentures vs. Implant Dentures
Traditional Dentures – Traditional dentures accelerate the bone loss that comes with missing teeth. That’s because traditional dentures simply rest on the gums and wear down the alveolar ridge over time. Adding to the problem, traditional dentures lack tooth roots that would otherwise encourage rejuvenation of the jaw. As your jaw shrinks, your denture becomes unstable and the lower third of your face collapses, adding years to your looks.
Implant-Supported Dentures – Implant-supported dentures are held in place by a series of dental implants embedded in the jaw. These small posts function as tooth roots and encourage the jaw to build new bone. This prevents the bone atrophy that follows tooth loss. Your jaw retains its shape and your denture, held firmly in place by the implants, will never embarrass you by slipping or falling out. It’s the closest thing to having your real teeth back.

Dentures Treatment Timeline
Preparatory Procedures – In some cases, patients may require preparatory procedures before dentures can be placed. Common examples include extractions, tooth root removal, or ridge augmentation to prepare the jaw. If this step is necessary, it can add a few months to your total treatment timeline.
Dental Implant Placement – If you opt for a dental implant-supported prosthesis, the implants must be placed a few months before receiving the denture. In some instances, immediate denture placement may be possible. However, in most cases, three to six months of healing must occur to ensure stability.
Dental Impressions – To create a denture that fits perfectly, we will take impressions of your gums and any remaining natural teeth. These impressions are used to create custom molds of your mouth, which we send to our trusted partners at a dental lab.
Denture Fabrication – When the lab receives your dental models, they will use them to craft a custom set of dentures. A skilled technician will use the latest and most advanced materials for lifelike results.
Final Adjustments – Your new dentures will be shipped to our San Antonio office, where you will be scheduled for another appointment. During this visit, our dentist will help you try on the prosthesis and make any necessary final adjustments. It is important to note that several adjustments may be necessary before you achieve the desired fit.
How Partial Dentures
Complete Your SmileMaintaining Your Dentures
Traditional Full and Partial Dentures
- Brush your dentures twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive denture cleanser to avoid scratching the denture. Hold the dentures over a folded towel or a sink filled with water to avoid breaking the denture if it's dropped.
- Clean your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth after removing your dentures to remove plaque and any dental adhesive.
- Give your gums a break, and leave your dentures out while you sleep. Soak dentures overnight in water or denture-soaking solution.
Implant-Supported Dentures
- Implant-supported dentures need to be brushed, too! Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. An electric toothbrush may be helpful for thoroughly cleaning your restoration.
- Floss daily, using a gentle approach to clean around the implants and along the gumline. A floss threader or water flosser can help clean hard-to-reach areas.
