What Can Crowns Do for My Teeth?
Improve Health, Appearance, and FunctionNatural-Looking Results
Advanced dental materials, such as medical-grade ceramic and zirconia, allow us to create custom restorations that not only fit in with your smile but also mimic the translucency of your natural teeth.Better Oral Health
A damaged tooth can seriously compromise the health of your adjacent teeth. Dental crowns help enhance your appearance, reestablish chewing function, and restore optimal oral health.Strong and Durable
On average, dental crowns can last between 5 and 15 years. When cared for properly, they can last even longer. Dr. Perry creates crowns that are both durable and aesthetically pleasing.Dental Crown Treatment Process
What Should I Expect During My Dentistry Appointment?Tooth Preparation – First, your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel and reshape the existing tooth to make room for the crown. In some cases, filler material may be used to build up a damaged tooth.
Tooth Impressions – Once the tooth is prepared, our dentistry team will take impressions. These molds are then sent to our trusted dental lab partner here in San Antonio where they will craft your restoration.
Temporary Crown – To protect your tooth in the meantime, your dentist will place a temporary crown. This restoration is typically made from acrylic or composite and bonded with temporary cement.
Dental Crown Fabrication – A lab technician will begin crafting your custom crown using medical-grade porcelain. The color will be custom-shaded to match your natural teeth and your crown will be hand-finished for lifelike results.
Dental Crown Placement – It takes about two weeks for the lab to create your crown and ship it back to our office. During a second appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and bond the permanent crown into place.
Taking Care of Your Dental Crown
Protect Your Smile
Grinding or clenching (bruxism) can damage your restorations over time. If you suffer from bruxism, ask your dentist about a custom night guard.Practice Good Oral Hygiene
Brush and floss your teeth every single day. Remember, even though porcelain cannot decay, the underlying tooth structure is still vulnerable to cavities.Avoid Bad Habits
Habits like nail-biting or using your teeth to open packages can have serious consequences for your oral health. Chewing on ice can also damage your crown.Adjust Your Diet
Eating foods that are extremely sticky or hard can dislodge your crown. If you eat caramels, taffy, nuts, or popcorn, chew on the other side of your mouth if possible.Visit Your Dentist
Regular examinations and cleanings help our dental team keep a close eye on your crown and your overall oral health. Be sure to attend all scheduled appointments.Missing a Tooth?
An Implant-Supported Crown Can Restore Your SmileGet your full smile back! Traditional crowns protect damaged teeth, but crowns can also be used to fully restore a missing tooth. An implant-supported crown replaces the entire tooth structure, filling the gap in your smile with a functional, natural-looking prosthetic.
Dental implants are threaded titanium rods that are placed in the jaw where they act as artificial tooth roots. Implants fuse with your jawbone to create a stable base for restorations. Traditional approaches to restoring a single missing tooth require modifications to nearby healthy teeth, but an implant-supported crown allows a missing tooth to be replaced without impacting the rest of your smile. At River City Dental Solutions, Dr. Joseph Perry can perform the entire implant placement process from start to finish—something many dental offices don't offer.
How Much Do Crowns Cost?
The cost of a dental crown is as unique as the tooth being treated; many factors can influence cost, such as the material used and if associated procedures such as a root canal were needed. Thankfully, dental insurance often covers dental crowns. However, patients considering implant-supported crowns should note insurance doesn't cover the cost of dental implants, though it may cover the restoration.
For patients without insurance, we offer an in-house dental loyalty plan. This can help ensure treatment is accessible to all our patients.
