What Is A Full Mouth Reconstruction?
A full mouth reconstruction is a custom restorative plan utilizing a combination of procedures designed to completely restore the health, function, and comfort of your smile.
Who Is a Good Candidate For Full Mouth Reconstruction?
People who have a combination of issues, including:
- Lost teeth due to trauma or decay
- Multiple teeth that have been broken or cracked
- Constant jaw, muscle, and headache pain that has required continual adjustments to their bite
- Gum disease
- Bone recession in the jaw
The examination process will require X-rays, photographs, impressions, and a model of your bite. Once the examination is complete, your dentist will develop a personalized treatment plan to restore your oral health.
What Procedures Could Be Used?
There are several procedures your dentist could recommend based on your examination. Below are some of the most common dental procedures combined in a full mouth reconstruction:
Dental Implants
Dental implants replace the roots of missing teeth. The implants are titanium devices that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Following tooth loss, the implants provide the ultimate stability for crowns, dental bridges, or dentures. Thanks to dental implants, the replacement teeth will look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. Meanwhile, implants are the only restorative dentistry treatment that keeps the jaw from slowly shrinking and changing shape after tooth loss.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps placed over a dental implant to mimic the look and function of a natural tooth. They can also be placed over an existing tooth with severe compromises such as wear from teeth grinding, a large filling, or a fracture.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges fill the space left by missing teeth. In one method, the surrounding teeth are prepared for dental crowns, then the bridge is connected to the crowns and cemented into place. The bridge can also be supported by dental implants instead of crowns. Generally, it takes at least two implants to support a dental bridge. Bridges look and function like your normal teeth.
Dentures
Dentures replace missing teeth and can improve your bite, appearance, and speech. They can replace a full or partial dental arch. While traditional dentures are designed to achieve a firm fit with the gums, they remain prone to shifting. Dental implants give dentures a level of stability and function virtually equal to that of natural teeth.
Inlays and Onlays
An onlay replaces a damaged, decaying, or broken dental cusp (the highest points on the chewing surfaces of teeth). They are a less aggressive form of restoration than a crown, as they do not require as much of your existing tooth to be removed. An inlay is a similar restoration that replaces tissue between the cusps.
Veneers And Other Cosmetic Procedures
Veneers are a cosmetic dental procedure used to modify the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth. Veneers are a good option for someone who wants to improve the appearance of a tooth that is compromised in a way that does not affect oral health. The thin layers of porcelain are placed on the front surfaces of teeth to conceal cosmetic imperfections in your smile. Veneers and other cosmetic procedures such as whitening or gum contouring can give your reconstructed smile a beautiful aesthetic enhancement after your oral health needs have been met.
